Spring Cleaning For Pest Prevention

I always tell customers that the number one way to prevent pests is to control the environment. Hopefully, you've done most of your cleaning in the fall before the snow fell.

Pests are just like us they are looking for places where they are safe and have plenty of food and water. Under leaves or other debris in the yard makes for a great spot for earwigs, stinkbugs, and other bugs.

Standing water around your home will also invite wasps and flies. To prevent your home from being the hot spot for pests this year make sure you do a few of these simple things.

  1. Rake and clean up leaves and pine needles.
  2. Clean out your gutters
  3. Cut and trim trees and bushes so that they don't touch your home.
  4. Fix areas in your yard where water might collect. For example you might add gravel to downspout areas to allow for proper drainage.
  5. Be sure to start mowing early in the season and often.
  6. Clean out that garage or shop to make sure you don't have any issues like mice that can get worse once the temperatures go up.

This obviously isn't a complete list of things you can do to prevent pests but its a great start. It's always cheaper and easier to prevent pests from coming into your home than it is to get them to leave.

Good Luck!
